On May 20, 2024 the Hartford Data Collaborative hosted its annual Hartford Data Walk, featuring the data projects of the 2024 Hartford Youth Data Fellows: Jason Ahmad, Azoya Clarke, Elis Diaz, John D’Souza, Yadelis Lantigua, Teresa Lopez, Eduaniel Reinoso, Jay Rivera, Alex Roberts, and Kumari Sampson. The ten 2024 Hartford Youth Data Fellows (HYDF) presented data projects related to library engagement, home ownership, and the impact of evictions in Hartford.

Forty-six community members attended the Data Walk held at the Hartford Public Library, Park Street @ Lyric Branch. They represented city leadership, the Hartford Public Library, the Hartford Public Schools, the Behind the Rocks NRZ, local foundations, community organizations, teachers, and family members.  In addition, four HYDF alumni attended and discussed the findings with the youth. The Data Walk showcases the youth fellows' work and promotes data engagement among community members around key issues in Hartford.

Hartford City Council member Josh Michtom presented a Mayoral proclamation to each Youth Data Fellow for their collective effort in HYDF and contributions to public data literacy in Hartford. Mr. Michtom told the Hartford Data Collaborative he loved the data walk, and the Youth Data Fellowship as it gives kids a place to discuss issues that affect them in Hartford. “It was really nice to see how engaged the people were. They were interested in what we had to say. Every group had different questions and thoughts. I really liked the citation.” said Fellows Yadelis Lantigua and Azoya Clarke.

The youth represent different neighborhoods, high schools, and colleges in the area and are active in various programs in Hartford. They joined the Hartford Data Collaborative in January 2024 to participate in weekly data training and project development meetings. They learned how to access data about their community, analyze data, and develop data visualizations. They also learn and discuss Hartford history, and receive career advice and from local experts in the field. You can access the data presentations in the youth’s Data Snapshots here.

The Spring Data Walk is the culmination of the 2024 program. CTData would like to thank the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the North Hartford Ascend Pipeline, and the Graustein Foundation for their support of the Hartford Youth Data Fellows program.  More information about the Hartford Youth Data Fellows can be found here.
