Supply, Education, and Demand for Nurses in Connecticut

Since 2013, the Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce, Inc. (CCNW) has been at the forefront of advancing our understanding of Connecticut's nursing faculty, student, and workforce composition. This work is crucial to ensure we have a nursing workforce that is equipped to meet the needs of our residents. Historically, CCNW leveraged 'sample' nursing workforce supply data provided by the National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers bi-annually. This data was meticulously analyzed and translated into impactful infographics, which not only highlighted nurse demographics but also provided valuable insights for healthcare stakeholders across Connecticut.

In 2018, CCNW elevated its data capabilities by partnering with the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH) and the Connecticut Data Collaborative (CTData). This partnership provides access to a comprehensive dataset encompassing all licensed Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in Connecticut. Unlike sample data, this robust dataset reflects responses from all of Connecticut's licensed nursing professionals, offering unparalleled insights into the workforce caring for our communities. In partnership with CTData, CCNW also administers an annual survey of all pre-licensure nursing education programs in Connecticut to provide timely data on Connecticut’s nursing students and faculty. Finally, in 2019, CCNW partnered with the University of Washington’s Center for Health Workforce Studies and the Washington State Workforce Board to conduct a survey of healthcare professionals about their nursing workforce needs.
