The Civic Data Program is a partnership between the Connecticut Data Collaborative and schools (high schools and community colleges) that is designed to increase essential data literacy skills for students. The ability to read, work, analyze, and tell a story with data are necessary skills to be productive in the workforce and are also critical for building a strong democracy.

With the help of CTData staff, students are guided through a combination of instructional lessons and hands-on activities to create a data project from start to finish. At the end of the four sessions, students will create a visual data story that they can include in their portfolio for college, internships, or job applications.

Throughout this program, high school students will learn how to:

  • Identify what is and is not data

  • Generate questions that can be asked of data

  • Use Google Sheets to explore and analyze data

  • Develop insights and draw conclusions based on data analysis

  • Create a data story

  • Build visual representations of the data

  • Present their findings to their audience
