Webinar Recap: Navigating the New 2024 Population Estimates Dashboard
On September 23, 2024, we introduced our new 2024 Population Estimates Dashboard through an informational webinar. This powerful tool provides easy access to Connecticut census data from 2020 to the present for each of the state's towns and planning regions, marking a significant step forward in making vital demographic information easily accessible to the public, researchers and policymakers.
Key features of the dashboard include:
Connecticut Department of Public Health certified population estimates for Connecticut
Annual new housing unit permits for each town (from Census Bureau Buildings Unit Survey)
Data for towns and for planning regions
Connecticut replaced counties with planning regions in 1960, a change recognized by the Census Bureau as of 2022. These planning regions, defined by state statute, align with Connecticut's Regional Councils of Government. This alignment ensures Census Bureau data accurately reflects Connecticut's governance structure. In the dashboard and other Census Bureau tools, these planning regions are treated as county equivalents, with the term "counties" referring to these regions.
The webinar discusses some of the ways the census bureau collects and organizes the data used to create this dashboard as well as where one can find the background on the data used. The dashboard features interactive graphs of Connecticut's annual population estimates over time from 2020 through the most recent data year, 2023, for state planning regions and across vintages. By hovering over data points, in these graphs, you can see important information, such as:
Name of the selected geography
Currently selected estimate series, or vintage
The year the data was collected/reported
The population estimates for that region
