Looking Ahead to Census Day 2030: Celebrating America's Data Legacy

April 1, 2030 will be our next Census Day. Today, in anticipation of that day, we're reflecting on the remarkable impact of the Census Bureau—a cornerstone of American data transparency. The United States leads the world in public data accessibility, with the Census Bureau playing a crucial role.

From fulfilling its Constitutional mandate to count every person in the US to conducting specialized surveys like the Economic Census and American Housing Survey, the Bureau's 140+ surveys create a comprehensive portrait of American life. This wealth of information empowers countless organizations and individuals with insights that would otherwise be unattainable.

Census data has been instrumental in shaping your community in various ways, including:

  • Providing information for evidence-based community improvement initiatives

  • Helping community members hold elected officials accountable for resource allocation

  • Voters integrating what they have learned into their voting decisions

  • Equipping everyday Americans to participate effectively in local governance

As data privacy concerns grow, and as we begin to prepare for Census 2030, we have dual responsibilities: to utilize the valuable data currently available while advocating for the protection and enhancement of this national treasure (public good) we often take for granted.

Here at CTData, we will continue highlighting opportunities for civic engagement. We encourage you to follow the Census Project for deeper insights into current developments. And consider telling your census data story for We Are the Data, a project collecting stories about the myriad ways people utilize federal race and ethnicity data to improve our communities.

Data at Your Fingertips: Learn how to use our updated Data by Topic tool

Have you ever tried downloading data across multiple years and towns, only to encounter a bunch of steps for what should be a straightforward question?

We've been there too, which is why we created and recently updated our Data by Topic tool! This new and improved platform provides a convenient way to access Connecticut data at state, town, county, and planning region levels.

Our revamped interface makes it easy to explore American Community Survey (ACS) data from 2010 to 2023. The Data by Topic platform is a convenient way to access and download data for various geographies within Connecticut. Watch the webinar here!

Updated Population Estimates Dashboard

We’ve recently updated our Population Estimates Dashboard with vintage 2024 data to reflect Connecticut’s planning regions and the latest certified data. The dashboard provides insights into population changes—births, deaths, and migration—at both the state and regional levels, sourced from the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program (PEP). It also includes annual data on new housing units permitted in each town from the Census Bureau’s Building Permit Survey, ensuring a comprehensive view of demographic and housing trends. Explore the updated tool here and watch the webinar here!
