CTData Conference Recap: Population Estimates & Updates

Each year, the Census Bureau produces population estimates for each state and county that are different than the ACS t-year survey that many of us are used to. These are called Population Estimates, and these are the official measures of population & housing units between decennial censuses.

These estimates are produced using administrative records data & released for states July 1 every year. The administrative data used includes vital statistics (birth and death records), along with records on migration (based on data from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, among others). These data are then combined with information about housing units from the Census Bureau Building Permits Survey.

In this conference session, you will learn about the methodology that undergirds these annual data and learn about the ways you can access the data. And don’t forget to explore more of our 2022 Conference sessions here.
