Data Analyst / Data Janitor

The Collaborative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, established in 2009, is a public-private partnership created to advance effective planning and decision-making in Connecticut at the state, regional and local levels through the use of open and accessible data. The Collaborative serves residents, nonprofits, policymakers, and funders in using data to drive policy, program and service improvements.

We are seeking a data analyst / data janitor to join our team. We need you to help us refine our data management and ETL processes and to develop data stories for informing Connecticut residents about topical policy debates.

Reporting to the Director of Technology, the Data Analyst will process and publish data on our data hub, translate findings from exploratory and explanatory analysis into compelling and persuasive data story and/or data visualizations, and help develop internal tools for optimizing our ETL processes. 

The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, including technical proficiency in supporting tools such as R/Python, enjoy the interpretation of information and data and have a background in public policy in one or more of the following domains: municipal/public finance, education,  public health, healthcare, and/or criminal justice.

You must have/be:

  • Proficiency in statistical analysis for public policy with experience in R (preferred) or Python
  • Proficiency cleaning and managing complex datasets
  • One - three years of experience in a data-driven role providing research and analysis to inform decision-making
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Commitment to credible and independent analysis
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail
  • The ability to multi-task and work in a challenging, fast paced and evolving environment
  • An independent, highly organized, and self-starter
  • An energetic, hard-working and enthusiastic team player
  • Flexible, resourceful and persistent

It would be nice if you had:

  • Experience writing SQL, preferably for Postgres or MySQL databases
  • Experience visualizing data with R (using ggplot2 or other packages), Python (matplotlib, bokeh, etc.), and/or d3.js
  • Familiarity with US Census data
  • A background in municipal/public finance, healthcare policy, education policy, and/or criminal justice
  • Experience working with spatial data
  • Experience developing interactive data visualizations
  • Experience using modern software version control systems, preferably Git.
